Roe bustled back to the table, reaching out to take Aden’s hand. “We need you, Aden. Your father isn’t as young as he used to be, and he can’t keep the place going by himself. Ken’s always been a salesman. And Roger…he’s not doing too well.”

“What did you think was going to happen?” Aden’s question was low and controlled.

“Did you think you could show up here, give me a sad story, and I’d just pack up my life, quit my job, and follow you back to Kansas City?”

“I know that you have your own life here, Aden,” Nick said, and suddenly he looked very old. “I know we can’t expect you to come back with us right now. But we need your help, and we need it soon.”

Roe and Nick exchanged a look and she squeezed Chad’s shoulder. “Why don’t you and Charles go down to get the bags from the car?”

Chad looked annoyed at the request, but he didn’t protest. “Come on, puke face.”

Belle wished she could go down there with them. She kept trying to remind herself that Aden considered her a part of his life now, she had a right to be privy to these sorts of discussions. But she had never seen Aden look so angry, so cold, and it was almost frightening.

“There’s…I didn’t want to bring this all up now,” Nick said.

“What? You wanted to wait until after dinner?”

“Something like that,” Nick admitted. “It’s a delicate situation.”

“You’re offering me a job. How delicate could it be?”

Nick looked down and studied his hands. “We’re asking for a loan, too.”

After a beat, Aden said, “For the dealership?”

“No.”

Kevin stiffened and Aden jumped to his feet. “Excuse me.”

“Aden,” Nick said, standing as well. “Wait. Let me explain.”

“There’s nothing to explain.”

“Aden, please…”

Aden opened his mouth, like he was going to say something. But he closed it without speaking and shook his head. He glanced briefly at Kevin, and then grabbed his jacket and keys. The room was silent for several seconds after he slammed the door.
